I have such full engagement in my classroom even if the iPads are not in use as they will be soon in some capacity. My student's attendance is near perfect ( even during flu season.. is enthusiasm a flu antidote?). Their homework and class work is done and done well! Everything has just gotten more interesting with the addition of iPad + teacher + student+ enthusiasm. More visual.
I know that I don't have to be expert or have control all the time in the classroom. I facilitate, guide and as a learner I model a curious, flexible and relaxed attitude. Learning can be messy, confusing and wonderfully exciting. There will be mistakes . I have celebrated when a lesson veered off onto an interesting and helpful tangent or failed due to a glitz. They saw me be a flexible thinker, learner and teacher. Pre -iPad I used to make mistakes on 'purpose' and model how I could solve it or react. Now with the iPad it is genuine ;-). When these types of events happening and believe me they do when you have iPads, I do have to be willing to show them I am learning along side them. They are very understanding, smile and even giggle and want to be 'experts' . My class full of children with Autism who want HELP me and each other! That is so rewarding and we grow even closer as the rapport grows stronger, their confidence grows . My students have struggled for so long and have faced so many failures , confusions , anxiety etc. before getting to me that when they take the initiative to learn and try new things for themselves I am so proud! They are too. You should see them beam. My class is a safe place .. always has been actually but the iPads somehow made it more genuine as I was a more genuine learner right along side of them. .
